:: 25.09.02: Bev Heads To Jamaica With Christian Aid! (Source: Official Site)

Most people think of Jamaica and see a holiday island with palm trees, beaches and Bob Marley playing in the background. Unfortunately for those who live there everyday the reality isn't like that at all. There is a huge problem with poverty and gang fighting, also the Caribbean has the fastest growing rate of HIV & AIDS in the world after Sub Saharan Africa.

Beverley will be visiting two specific schemes over there which are S-Corner and Jamaica Aids Support. S-Corner is an initiative that tries to bring warring factions of the community together through sport and the arts. The encourage children from rival gangs to play together in football tournaments and act together in productions. The aim is long term and will hopefully bring these children together and as they grow older stop them from fighting each other so much. Jamaica Aids Support is a charity which aims to educate people about HIV/Aids how it is contracted and spread and how to prevent it. It also works to help people with the disease and with the families of people who are very ill or who have died from the illness.

If you want to find out more about these charities or donate some money towards them please click on the link below. Beverley will be writing a diary about the trip which we will place on the web as soon as we get back with exclusive pictures for you guys.

:: 13.09.02: Mercury Music Update
Lorna Clarke, a judge for this year's Mercury Music Prize, told Radio One recentley why she thought the albums shorlisted were so good and why they ended up being nominated. These are her comments about our Bev >>

"It's very exciting that you can now have people like Beverley Knight who are accomplished artists. I would say that she's wrongly been overlooked in some areas of the industry, but this is a woman that if you see her perform, she's one of the most dynamic performers; she has a vocal range that can match anyone. What's interesting about this album is that she's very much in control and she hasn't gone crazy with her voice, she's used it in a very measured and controlled way and that requires quite a lot of confidence really because if you know that you have a fantastic voice your tempted to let rip at every opportunity but she's matched her vocals to the songs. She's also written or co-written every song on the album, that's says 'I'm not just a singer' and I think that's good because in the soul singer or R&B arena you can get accused of being a voice on a stick. She's definitely not that, and I think that she's going to be around for a long time, she's someone that Britain will be proud of."
