:: 31.03.02 : Live Review @ Vega, Copenhagen (22nd March 2002)

Here is a fantastic review of Beverley Knight in Copenhagen. For more photos from the gig, click here!
(Thanx to Grand @ BK Official Forum for the link :)

'It has been three years since I first saw a Beverly Knight show - at Vega. I really don´t recall anything from that concert. But nevertheless, I have allways, since I first heard 'feel the flavour of the old school', been secretly in love with Beverly´s voice. It simply has been a joy to hear her develop throughout the years - not only as a singer, but also as person who isn´t afraid of expressing her feelings, hurt or even sadness through music.

Whetting our soulful appetites via one of England´s finest vocalists, the pace was set for an evening of unadultered solid soul. Hitting off with 'Whatever´s clever (are you ready for me)' a dynamic song from Knight´s just released album 'Who I am' the audience were to be treated to a stunning start. After only three to four songs, Beverly Knight proved that she´s not only a talented vocalist but also a truly great stage performer.

Friday night´s main character contained everything from dynamic to depth, which she showed us when she sang 'Shape of you'. But what she had, the band was missing. They are proffesionel musicians, but they never really touched me. I had been looking forward to hearing the guitarist Paul Reidwho has worked with as prominent people as Usher, Brandy and Whitney Houston among others, but in the mix I really couldn´t feel the guitar. The only time I got the chance to enjoy his playing was in 'Shape of you'. On the other hand I was glad to make the acquaintance of drummer Carlos Hercules (has worked with Lynden David Hall) who turned out to be Friday night´s musical pleasure.

The rest of the band was: Steve Walters on bass (has worked with Chaka Khan, later you´ll understand why this is important), Ashley K on keys and "Laila Walker", Nomvula Malinga and Lucy Jules all vocals. In spite of my disappointment with the band´s lack of enthusiasm I felt good - mainly because of Beverly´s convincing performance. Maybe she was starting a party because of the manageable crowd or maybe because it was her birthday and the audience, together with the band, sang a birthday song and brought her a cake on stage which made her shed a tear.

None the less she really kicked a.. after this. First she delivered a cover version of 'Feel for you' by legendary Chaka Khan. We have all heard this song before, but no matter how many times you hear it, it remains absolutely phenomenal. Then came what people had been waiting for: 'Feel the flavour of the old school' and finally she had the crowd exactly were she wanted them to be - under her musical spell. After returning two times for extras, including 'Get up!', she left her audience wanting more and surely as potentiel buyers of her new album which songs they accepted and embraced to the maximum.

This time I´m definitely gonna remember her show and won´t hesitate to go and see her again!'

:: 08.03.02 : Another 'Who I Am' Album Review!!
This is taken from London's 'Time Out' magazine, reviewed by Peter Robinson.

Let's get this out the way: Beverley Knight is British. Proudly so, defiantly so, and so on. Many people are British. Beverley Knight is one of them. Not American... But British! Then again, so is Esther Rantzen, and you wouldn't expect her to sustain a seven-year career as a soul singer on the back of it. The Prince-influenced 'Same (As I Ever Was)', buried in the middle of Knight's third album, says a lot. 'I'm back!' it shrieks. 'And I haven't had to change!'. This is not quite true: while the pop charts may have come round to Knight's way of thinking, the success of 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda' and the potential success of this album rely more on the simple fact that Knight is at the height of her creativity. She's not the same as ever, at all: she's better than ever with tracks here like the Destiny's-esque 'Whatever's Clever', and not-the-East 17-one 'Gold' (cue snowflakes - it's the Christmas single). The tunes are pert, fresh and produced - by the likes of Dodge and D'Influence - to perfection.

While one hopes that the album's title is mistaken (if 'Who I Am' showcases the full spectrum of Beverley's personality then she's not the most exciting girl in the world), this could easily thrust Knight into that much-deserved realm of The Wider Audience. 'Made It Back' puns to the usual address, please.

:: 06.03.02 : Dotmusic 'Who I Am' Album Review
Here is another review on Beverley Knight's forthcoming album 'Who I Am', however this one seems less positive than Q Magazine. (Reviewed by Diana Evans)

Beverley Knight is not the redeemer of British R&B; she is the last woman standing. In the last few years, and particularly since the garage explosion, we have seen acts like Kele le Roc, Shola Ama and Mark Morrison disappear through lack of clout - and this is no reflection on talent. Beverley sings like a dream, but the watery chart pandering of 'Who I Am' is unlikely to bring her that hunky combination of credibility and stardom she so desperate wants.

When she originally broke through with the single, 'Flava of the Old Skool', it all seemed so effortless. Yet this album, like her last one, seems to reach for something that simply isn't there anymore - a commercial audience for homegrown soul. This time round, the soul is strategically pop-packaged and frilled with acoustics. It's much more fetching when the bass is deeper, the rhythm smoother, such as on the classy duet with Musiq Soulchild, 'Beautiful Contradiction'. And when our Bev gets feisty on her superb recent hit 'Get Up!' and a fiery follow-up, 'Same (As I Ever Was)'.

But on the whole it's edging towards the bland and dispensable, with the second single release 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda' taking some of the blame. Unlike TLC's successful transition to the acoustic sound with 'Fanmail', this attempt to push Beverley to the crossover point reveals more a lack of real direction than a soul star at her peak. No matter how much she may insist, we're not convinced that 'Who I Am' is really who Beverley Knight is.

:: 02.03.02 : Q Magazine'Who I Am' Album Review
As the world awaits the release of Beverley Knight's brand new album 'Who I Am', out on the 11th March, more and more reviews are being written up. Here is one of many, taken from Q Magazine. (Reviewed by Nick Duerden)

After scooping a couple of MOBOs for her last album, 1998's Prodigal Sista, and landing a supporting role on the recent Jamiroquai tour, Wolverhampton's Beverley Knight looks ready to become a bona fide star. Who I Am is a remarkably confident record that's unashamedly American in flavour, straddling the divide between, say, Destiny's Child and Mary J Blige. She's in fantastic voice throughout, equally adept at powerhouse blues (Bestseller Mystery), tight funk (Get Up!) and Prince-style workouts (Hurricane Jane). Co-written with the people behind Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and TLC, this is flamboyant stuff. The sparkling Who I Am, in particular, gives the impression of a star about to go stellar. ****
